DRAGONFLIES MAKE WAVES!
The Dragonflies lacrosse Club held a tournament in the glorious sunshine last weekend, with their U14 Purple team coming away as champions in their age group.
The competition, held at the Old Reigations Ground, was attended by nine different teams and more than 100 girls.
In the tournament Cobham emerged as winners over Brooklands (Manchester) in the U12s section with Reigate finishing in 3rd place.
In the U14 section Reigate entered two teams with Dragonflies Purple victorious over Guildford and Dragonflies White ending in 4th spot.
Guildford proved tough opposition in the final, but sound defence and Goals from Ella Hodgkinson, Kristan Roy and Ellie Ballard saw Reigate Home.
The Reigate Dragonflies were only established in July last year but already have more than 60 members and we can only see the sport gaining more interest in the coming year.
"Our Aim is grow the club and we have had an amazing response. We hope to expand our ladies side next year as there seem to be a lot of ladies interested in playing next year".

Well, I am repeating this as 1929 was a good year. On 20th February Reigate beat Surbiton 11-2 at home and then the next day beat King’s College of H & S S 9-3 away. Just a few days later on Feb 25th South with 2 Reigate players beat Midlands 5-4 at Malvern. Straker and Whitehead were the 2 Reigate players. On March 4th South beat North 4-3 at Aigburth and then went on to beat West 11-2 at Merton on March 9th South were Territorial Champions that year. On March 7th Reigate beat Byfleet 9-3. Another satisfactory season was almost over!Do not forget that although the Dragonflies are new, we have a proud heritage . The Reigate Ladies were an awesome team!

RAY REMEMBERS The Archives. With all this snow, it take me back 30 years, when I was captain of Buckhurst Hill (Essex), to a match we played when 6ins of snow had fallen prior to a game we had against a university team from the US. To save the game, we got the groundsman to run the tractor over the pitch dragging a chain harrow . This compressed the snow, but lightly brushed the surface and gave enough texture to take a stud. We then chipped out the markings and the game was on. Not perfect, An orange ball stood out against the snow. The yanks beat us on the pitch, but not in the bar!

In the 30’s international matches were played at the end of the season over a period of about a month . England led by Reigate’s Val Straker beat Scotland in Manchester on 19th March 12-6 and then went to Belfast to play Ireland on 1st April, again winning 19-0. Reigate’s M Whitehead scored 4 goals . Finally they played Wales on 9th April. The Irish match was the first ever international match in Belfast. Only a small lacrosse population in Ireland , but by 1939 , they could claim to be the 2nd best team in world behind England. Lacrosse died in Ireland , but just recently some efforts have been made to start the game at Queens University , Belfast. In South , Lacrosse has a foothold again.
